Hockey Shin Guard Sizing Guide: Get the Right Fit and Protection

Shin guards are one of the most overlooked pieces of hockey kit — until a badly fitted one slides down mid-match or restricts your stride. Getting the size right matters just as much as the padding quality.

How to Measure for Shin Guards

The simplest way to size a shin guard is against the wearer's actual leg, not just their age or shoe size:

  1. Measure from just below the kneecap down to just above the ankle bone.
  2. Note the calf width as well — growing kids and adults with a wider calf may need to size up even if the length matches a smaller size.
  3. Always try to leave a small gap at the ankle so the guard doesn't dig in when running.

Size Guide Overview

  • XS — best suited for young juniors, typically ages 5–8.
  • S — suited for older juniors and smaller-framed players, typically ages 9–12.
  • M — fits most teenage and adult players of average build.
  • L — for taller or larger-framed adult players who need extra coverage.

These are general guides — if a player is between sizes, it's usually better to size up slightly rather than down, since a shin guard that's a little large can still be secured firmly with the straps, while one that's too small won't offer full protection.

What Makes a Good Shin Guard

  • Padding foam should be dense enough to absorb a hard hit, but not so stiff that it restricts natural leg movement.
  • Strap system should hold securely through a full match without needing constant readjustment.
  • Coverage should extend from just below the knee to above the ankle, protecting the whole shin without gaps.

Caring for Your Shin Guards

Let them air dry after each session rather than leaving them in a closed bag — trapped moisture breaks down foam padding faster and can affect the straps over time. A quick wipe-down after muddy matches also extends their lifespan considerably.
